Greenfield

Protecting Investment

In greenfield projects, early design decisions shape the long-term performance, reliability, and cost of an asset.

OUR VALUE

Protecting Investment

In greenfield projects, early design decisions shape the long-term performance, reliability, and cost of an asset. Yet too often, these foundations are laid without the clarity or rigour required, resulting in misalignment, inefficiencies, and inflated total cost of ownership.

At ICSS, we build it differently. We lead with engineering discipline, system-level thinking, and lifecycle awareness, ensuring early decisions deliver value not just at startup, but across decades of operation. Our delivery model is grounded in precision, driven by process, and proven in real world operations.

We provide more than engineering support. We optimise delivery schedules, improve execution efficiency, and protect return on investment over the long term.

Embedded from the Start

In the early stages of a project, functional safety and cyber security are often addressed in isolation, treated as generic, theoretical compliance tasks with limited consideration for operational realities.

We integrate protection into the core of the design. Our engineers bring extensive operational experience to the table, allowing us to shape safety systems and cyber strategies that are not only compliant, but practical, maintainable, and cost-effective. We eliminate overdesign, minimise shutdown risk, and define proportionate controls that reduce operational burden, right from day one.

Whether acting as cyber security authority, functional safety authority, or strategic advisor, we design protection strategies that deliver long-term value, not just short-term compliance.

Predictable Outcomes

Fast-paced delivery environments can lead to shortcuts in engineering and commissioning that have lasting consequences. We mitigate this risk by bringing experienced engineers and specialists into the project early.

Our approach ensures that systems are buildable, testable, and aligned with operational expectations. Acting as design and commissioning authority, we reduce rework, avoiding late-stage surprises, cost escalation, and handover friction.

We execute critical scopes directly or in close partnership with EPCs and automation contractors, maintaining control over quality and reducing delivery risk. Our commissioning approach is structured, coordinated, and aligned across disciplines, turning complex projects into smooth, predictable outcomes.

Systems that Perform

Effective automation systems require more than meeting initial specifications, they must be designed with lifecycle performance in mind.

Our systems engineers and control specialists bring full lifecycle experience into the design phase, ensuring that architectures are scalable, logic is robust, and control strategies are performance-driven from day one. We produce clear, unambiguous requirements that guide vendors, avoid rework, and protect value.

Using proprietary tools, we simulate and optimise designs before anything is built, removing ambiguity, compressing timelines, and ensuring clean execution in FAT and commissioning. Every decision is informed by real-world performance, ensuring systems operate reliably, not just comply with standards.

The ICSS Difference

We provide integrated delivery across all industrial automation disciplines, embedding technical assurance from the earliest project stages and throughout execution. This ensures alignment between design, construction, commissioning, and operational goals from the start.

By approaching greenfield delivery as a strategic opportunity, we help clients reduce lifecycle cost, improve system reliability, and deliver assets that perform as intended from initial startup through long-term operation.

This is how we maximise project value and protect investment.

OUR APPROACH

01 Concept Definition

We support early-phase development by shaping the technical vision for control, safety, and automation systems. We define the functional role of each system, align with process and operational goals, and identify key project risks and constraints from the outset.

We bring structure to the earliest stages, translating broad project objectives into a clear technical concept that's grounded, cost-aware, and lifecycle optimised. Our input at this stage avoids costly mid-project redirection and sets a clear path to execution certainty.

02 Basis of Design

We develop Basis of Design documents, including control, shutdown, fire and gas, cyber security, and commissioning philosophies. These documents formalise design principles, boundary definitions, operational assumptions, and compliance targets.

Our focus is on practicality and traceability. We ensure each philosophy is implementable, aligned with operational expectations, and supports consistent engineering across all project stages.

03 System Architecture

We define the architecture for control and safety systems, including networks, segmentation, interfacing strategies, and level of protection required. We align system design with functional safety and cyber security requirements from the start.

We design system architectures that work in the real world. We integrate lifecycle thinking and standard compliance into practical, efficient designs that reduce complexity, risk, and long-term cost.

04 User Requirements

We develop unambiguous user requirement specifications for control and safety systems, instrumentation, and related packages. These define functional expectations, performance criteria, and validation methods in detail.

Our specifications eliminate ambiguity, accelerate design, and reduce vendor interpretation errors. Using our proprietary tools, we link requirements directly to simulations and test criteria, ensuring traceability from concept to commissioning.

05 Package Management

We define scopes of work and manage vendor engagement only after system requirements are fully developed and interfaces are defined. This reduces rework and commercial risk by minimising vague scope development and misaligned expectations.

Our approach defers vendor engagement until designs are fully mature. Because we understand the technologies and systems in detail, we can manage technical risks internally while shaping a more robust solution. This enables fixed-priced scope procurement with reduced risk of variation.

06 Design Verification

We conduct formal design verification once systems are built and integrated but before they are mobilised to site. This includes factory-based reviews, logic verification, interface validation, and virtual commissioning using process simulators.

We catch issues before they become site problems. By verifying in the factory, we reduce commissioning risk, minimise late-stage rework, and improve start-up confidence. Our tools and structured process ensure that what's delivered meets both functional and operational requirements.

07 Commissioning

We execute full commissioning scopes, covering both static and dynamic phases. This includes loop checks, functional testing, system energisation, interlock verification, and process start-up. We work closely with operations, vendors, and multi-discipline teams to bring systems online safely and efficiently.

We bring structure, discipline, and real-world focus to one of the most time-critical stages of the project. Our team bridges engineering and operations to resolve issues quickly, prevent rework, and keep the commissioning process moving.

08 Handover

We manage technical handover with complete, validated documentation and support for operations. This includes as-built records, training materials, and system performance evidence, all aligned to project closure requirements.

Our structured process ensures clients receive a system that is understood, documented, and ready for efficient, reliable operation from day one.
