OUR VALUE

Measurable Value

Once assets enter operation, priorities shift. The margin for error narrows, and engineering must balance safety, efficiency, and commercial discipline. In brownfield environments, change must be implemented safely, systems must evolve without disruption, and investments must deliver measurable value.

At ICSS, this is where we thrive. We work within the real-world constraints of operating assets, delivering improvements that manage risk, enhance performance, and contain cost. Our focus is on engineering that is effective, proportionate, and aligned with operational needs.

We engineer change with clarity, control, and accountability to ensure it delivers real results.

Practical Risk Reduction

In live environments, managing functional safety and cyber security effectively is complex and requires more than compliance with industry standards. It requires the implementation of practical risk mitigations that are integrated with site operations while maintaining alignment with regulatory expectations.

Our cyber security programmes go beyond simple compliance. We implement meaningful countermeasures in live environments without compromising production. We translate risk into language that operational teams understand, enabling practical mitigations that maintain compliance while containing cost.

In functional safety, we optimise test strategies, reduce unnecessary shutdowns, and help clients take credit for real-world events using our proprietary tools. Our approach avoids unnecessary scope and focuses on maintaining risk at ALARP without increasing operational burden.

Making Change Work

Brownfield delivery requires more than technical knowledge. It requires judgement, coordination, and clear communication.

Our engineers and commissioning specialists understand what it takes to execute live changes safely and efficiently. Whether we're upgrading systems, implementing new logic, or supporting vendor packages, we work with site operations to minimise disruption, manage risk, and keep the schedule on track.

We manage commissioning and cutover activities with structure and discipline, ensuring safe implementation and a clear transition from engineering to operations. Our delivery approach is built to reduce uncertainty, protect uptime, and ensure modifications are both technically robust and operationally viable.

Unlocking Performance

Even in stable and mature plants, there are opportunities for improvement. We identify and unlock performance gains through targeted assessment and operational insight.

Our engineers and control specialists work with clients to optimise performance and unlock the full potential of existing systems and process equipment. Our approach helps avoid costly replacements or upgrades by prioritising practical improvements and quick wins.

When an upgrade is necessary, we help clients make smarter investment decisions, bringing impartial advice, lifecycle awareness, and performance data to support targeted replacement or staged migrations. Every recommendation is engineered to maximise impact while minimising spend.

The ICSS Difference

Executing scopes in live environments is complex. But with the right team, it can be done safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption.

We bring a structured, lifecycle-informed approach to brownfield engineering. We understand the constraints. We understand the risks. And we know how to deliver change that unlocks value from existing equipment.

We manage change with clarity, control, and assurance, helping clients maintain compliance, improve performance, and sustain value through all phases of operation.

We don't overengineer. We simplify, de-risk, and deliver.

OUR APPROACH

01 Vulnerability Assessment

We conduct comprehensive assessments of control and safety systems, evaluating obsolescence, integrity, operability, and performance. This includes detailed reviews of alarm and control loop performance, providing a complete picture of system health and risk exposure.

Our assessments are technically grounded and operationally relevant. They identify real vulnerabilities, not just outdated components but what's genuinely at risk. Findings are clear, actionable, and prioritised to ensure investment is directed where it delivers the greatest impact.

02 Scope Framing

We evaluate the feasibility and value of addressing vulnerabilities or how best to adapt existing systems to accommodate new process demands or facilities. This includes assessing system capacity, architectural impact, and modification complexity.

We don't default to new or replacement equipment, we optimise what's there. By framing scope around real value drivers, system constraints, and future flexibility, we reduce cost, avoid unnecessary change, and ensure solutions are appropriate, scalable, and sustainable.

03 Migration Strategy

We define the migration and commissioning strategy early in the design process, shaping system changes around operational, technical, and delivery constraints. This includes brownfield staging plans, fallback strategies, and interface management.

Our migration and commissioning strategies de-risk implementation, protect production, and prevent late-stage surprises, ensuring that even complex modifications can be delivered effectively in a live environment.

04 Specification

We develop clear, complete specifications that define the modification or upgrade scope, including functionality, interfaces, and compliance requirements. These can be executed by vendors, integrators, or internally by our own team.

Our specifications are built for execution. They're structured to reduce ambiguity and vendor misinterpretation, enabling fast, focused implementation, whether through third parties or our lightweight execution model.

05 Build & Test

We manage the execution of modifications by leading system vendor teams or our own system integration team. This includes hardware builds, software configuration, FATs, interface testing, and simulation.

Our delivery model is adaptable, leveraging vendor teams or deploying our own resources, depending on project needs. In either case, we maintain oversight to ensure quality, cost, and schedule are tightly controlled.

06 Commissioning

We plan and execute commissioning activities in coordination with operations and engineering teams, covering system configuration, loop checks, interlock validation, and operational testing in live environments.

Our approach provides technical assurance without compromising plant availability. We maintain accountability and work within operational windows to minimise risk during implementation.

07 Maintenance

We perform both corrective and preventative maintenance on control and safety systems, including SIF proof testing and annual assurance activities. Where vendor support is required, we manage the interface on behalf of the client.

Our focus is on practical, effective maintenance that keeps systems compliant, functional, and aligned with operational needs, without overburdening the site team or inflating cost.

08 Support

We take ownership of systems, covering both application and technology-level issues. We provide a single point of contact for both office and site-based operational teams, and manage third-party vendors as needed.

Our involvement doesn't end at delivery. We remain engaged to ensure continuity of knowledge, fast issue resolution, and operational confidence in system performance.
