C&I Engineering

Trusted to lead. Delivering projects with accountability.

We engineer the detail but also provide experience and judgement that keeps projects moving and assets performing. We take ownership of outcomes, not just tasks.

OUR VALUE

Trusted to Lead

Control and Instrumentation (C&I) engineering plays a central role in the delivery of complex projects, connecting multi-discipline teams to produce integrated designs. When done well, it creates clarity, coordination, and confidence across the full project lifecycle. When done poorly, it leads to misalignment, delay, and reduced value.

At ICSS, we deliver C&I scopes that are technically rigorous, practically executable, and lifecycle-conscious. We engineer the detail but also support our clients as delivery partners to provide experience and judgement that keeps projects moving and systems performing.

We take ownership of outcomes, not just tasks. We bring deep knowledge, proven processes, and subject matter experts who have lived through the consequences of poor design and incomplete thinking. We are trusted by our clients to lead with clarity, insight, and accountability.

Right First Time

In greenfield projects, we take a leadership role in delivery, often acting as the design authority on behalf of the end client. Our engineers guide the full scope of C&I activity, from conceptual design through to FAT, site execution, and handover.

We bring experience across all project phases, enabling informed design decisions that reduce churn, improve constructability, and support long-term system performance. This lifecycle insight helps our clients make better choices earlier, supporting a right first-time approach, and avoiding costly downstream changes.

Working closely with EPCs and project teams, we deliver high-quality designs that support efficient execution. Our structured approach, supported by in-house tools, enables us to manage complexity and help keep delivery on schedule.

Lean Engineering

In brownfield environments, C&I engineering must balance technical requirements with operational constraints and process realities. We support modifications, upgrades, and issue resolution with a focus on safety and clarity, while minimising operational impact and disruption.

Our engineers combine detailed design knowledge with operational experience, enabling practical implementation and sound decision-making under constraint.

We apply lean engineering principles and structured processes to produce accurate, consistent deliverables that reduce rework, protect schedules, and lower total project cost. This approach ensures that every change, no matter the size, delivers clear, measurable value across the asset lifecycle.

Reducing OPEX

In the later stages of the asset lifecycle, engineering processes need to change. Equipment must be maintained with fewer resources and continue to perform with minimal modification.

We support clients in the late-life operation and decommissioning phase by rationalising systems, simplifying documentation, and maintaining compliance without overengineering. Our engineers assess the risk landscape, identify essential equipment, and help shape cost-effective maintenance and modification strategies.

We understand what needs to be retained, what can be removed, and how to document changes efficiently. Whether supporting continued operation or preparing for shutdown, we help clients make technically sound, proportionate decisions aligned to remaining asset life.

The ICSS Difference

At ICSS, C&I engineering is at the core of our capability and provides the technical foundation that supports our wider team of specialists.

But our engineers bring more than technical know-how. They bring judgement, leadership, and accountability. The ability to get things right first time, and the experience to know what matters most when time and cost are tight.

We work across the full lifecycle, across disciplines, and across delivery models, ensuring designs are technically robust, maintainable, and aligned with operational need.

In C&I engineering, precision matters and we make sure every detail delivers.

OUR APPROACH

01 Design Authority

We act as the client-side design authority, embedded within project teams to lead, assure, and coordinate C&I engineering delivery across disciplines and contractors.

We lead by example and ensure decisions are technically sound, vendor scopes are aligned, and changes are controlled. We take ownership and drive outcomes, turning complexity into tangible results.

02 Conceptual Design

We support early-phase concept development, defining instrumentation philosophies, control system boundaries, high-level architectures, and automation scopes aligned with process and safety intent.

Our lifecycle experience ensures the right questions are asked upfront. We identify constraints, reduce unnecessary complexity, and shape concepts that are technically sound and operationally viable.

03 FEED

We develop C&I FEED deliverables, including control system architecture, instrument philosophies and strategies, indexes, schedules, preliminary diagrams, and high-level specifications.

By approaching FEED with an end-user mindset, we improve definition, reduce ambiguity, minimise downstream design changes, and support better vendor pricing and execution planning.

04 Detailed Design

We produce complete C&I design packages, including datasheets, hook-ups, loop drawings, cable schedules, termination diagrams, interface definitions, and vendor scopes of work.

Our structured processes and automation tools reduce effort on routine tasks, enabling efficient delivery without compromising technical quality or construction readiness.

05 Package Management

We manage vendor packages with discipline and detail, reviewing documentation, coordinating interfaces, and holding vendors accountable for technical, cost, and schedule requirements.

Our role goes beyond oversight. With deep technical understanding and system-level insight, we spot issues early, resolve misalignment before it becomes rework, and drive reliable integration.

06 Workpack Development

We compile construction and commissioning workpacks with scope definitions, redline drawing sets, test procedures, and installation guidance tailored to greenfield or brownfield execution.

Our workpacks are built for clarity, precision, and action. We bridge engineering and field execution with documentation that is technically correct, practical, and field-friendly.

07 Closeout

We support the final phase of project execution by compiling as-built records, updating drawings, and ensuring documentation is complete, traceable, and handed over correctly.

We help clients avoid the documentation chaos that often follows handover. Our structured closeout process ensures the operational team inherits accurate, usable information for ongoing support.

08 Operational Support

We work directly with site operations to support issue resolution, modification scoping, control system changes, and routine maintenance planning in live environments.

Our engineers understand how operations really run and excel at troubleshooting and problem-solving. They help improve uptime, stabilise performance, and maximise production efficiency.
