Flare Ignition System Upgrade

A long-unavailable flare ignition system was redesigned, integrated, tested, and commissioned so operators could ignite remotely from the central control room.

The Challenge

Remote ignition had been lost

The flare ignition system on a UK oil and gas installation had not been operational for several years, requiring the flare to be ignited locally rather than from the central control room.

The client needed to install a replacement flare ignition system and interface it with the installation's Integrated Control and Safety System (ICSS). The upgraded arrangement had to restore remote ignition capability while fitting within the constraints of the existing control and safety infrastructure.

The challenge was not limited to replacing equipment. The new flare ignition panel needed a clear interface design, a robust control system modification, and a commissioning route that could prove the complete end-to-end function without disrupting installation operations.

ICSS was engaged to design, specify, test, and commission the ICSS modifications, complete the interface design for the new flare ignition panel, and lead the overall dynamic commissioning of the system.

Our Scope

A controlled route to restoration

ICSS specified the modification in sufficient detail to define the services, interfaces, and delivery activities required to complete the scope safely and efficiently.

We acted as design authority for the project, providing technical direction and control while managing the system supplier. This included shaping the ICSS modification, defining the interface with the new flare ignition panel, and ensuring the solution remained aligned with operational and safety requirements.

Our team developed the factory acceptance testing and offshore commissioning strategy, including the supporting procedures needed to validate the panel, prove the ICSS interface, and manage the transition to offshore execution.

ICSS witnessed factory acceptance testing of the new flare ignition panel and acted as commissioning authority offshore, witnessing execution of the modifications and accepting the completed scope on behalf of the client.

The Result

Remote ignition restored

ICSS developed a solution that optimised the loop design and reduced the required cabling infrastructure, helping lower implementation cost while maintaining the required functionality and assurance.

The modifications to the ICSS were delivered on time to meet the planned shutdown window, with factory testing and offshore commissioning providing confidence that the new ignition route performed as intended.

The replacement flare ignition system was successfully integrated with the existing control and safety infrastructure, restoring the ability for operators to ignite the flare remotely from the central control room.

The scope was executed and handed over with no impact to installation operations, giving the client a practical, proven, and operationally usable ignition solution.
