F&G Upgrade

A major operator needed a stronger fire and gas basis for automatic executive action, clearer performance requirements, and a practical route into execution.

The Challenge

Coverage gaps needed closing

A major oil and gas operator required an upgrade of the Fire & Gas (F&G) system to reduce risk to as low as reasonably practicable by removing reliance on human intervention for executive actions.

The existing detection coverage and system design basis did not provide the level of confidence needed for early detection of F&G events and automatic activation of control actions across the asset.

The client needed a structured concept phase that could define the performance requirements for each fire zone, compare those requirements against the installed system, and identify a practical route to close the most important gaps.

ICSS was engaged to provide C&I engineering leadership, bringing the technical detail, stakeholder coordination, and delivery judgement needed to shape a credible upgrade scope for execution.

Our Scope

A practical upgrade basis

ICSS developed the F&G philosophy that defined the methodology for determining performance requirements for each fire zone, referencing applicable UK legislation, client standards, international standards, and recognised engineering practice.

We facilitated and chaired workshops with key stakeholders to establish the fire zone performance requirements and capture the rationale behind each decision. This gave the project a clear, agreed technical basis rather than a collection of disconnected improvement ideas.

Our engineers completed a gap analysis of the installed F&G detection and system configuration against the approved design basis documentation. The findings were prioritised by risk and supported with clear justification so the client could focus investment where it would make the greatest difference.

The concept scope was converted into delivery-ready project definition through a concise basis of design, a project execution plan for the Statement of Requirements, and a level 3 cost estimate and schedule covering engineering, materials, construction, and commissioning.

The Result

Ready for controlled execution

The project concept phase was delivered successfully and on schedule, giving the client a robust framework for the next phase of the F&G upgrade.

The work created a clearer understanding of required detection performance, existing system gaps, and the relative priority of improvement areas across the asset.

By combining detailed C&I engineering with structured workshop facilitation and practical execution planning, ICSS helped turn a broad risk-reduction objective into a defined and justifiable upgrade scope.

Following successful delivery of the concept phase, ICSS was awarded the concept optimisation scope to further define the project requirements and evaluate technology options that could reduce capital expenditure without compromising the required protection outcome.

C&I Engineering

We engineer the detail but also provide experience and judgement that keeps projects moving and assets performing. We take ownership of outcomes, not just tasks.

Right first time

Technical and delivery assurance with SMEs working the detail at every step of the engineering process.

Design authorities

We act as the client-side design authority, embedded within project teams to lead, assure, and coordinate.
